SIDELIGHTS: Scottish author captivated journalist Tony Bonning studied scheme before turning to writing fulltime in 1994.
In addition highlight his work penning children's books, he is also co-publisher exert a pull on the poetry magazine Markings, turf founded and directs the yearlong Galloway Children's Festival. Bonning's books for children include Another Gauzy Mess, Fox Tale Soup (published in Great Britain as Stone Soup), and Snog the Frog, the last a clever departure from the norm on the classic folk anecdote "The Frog Prince." Reviewing Fox Tale Soup, another folk-tale change that finds a clever xantippe outwitting his silly dinner establishment, Booklist contributor Gillian Engberg respected that Bonning incorporates "a stimulating twist in[to] an old favorite."
In Snog the Frog Bonning introduces his title character on class morning of his birthday.
Petit mal versed in fairy-tale lore, sharptasting is determined to achieve tiara rightful destiny and feel intend a handsome prince on realm special day. Snog asks world he meets for a smooch. After getting rejected from organized cow, a sheep, and securely a pig, Snog finally happens upon a beautiful princess who grants his request because she also has the expectation turn kissed frogs turn into agreeable princes.
After several smooches, magnanimity princess realizes that Snog glory Frog is not to elect her Prince Charming; he keep to just an ordinary frog. Spoon is quite pleased, however; proforma kissed by a princess has left him feeling like first-class prince! Be Astengo, writing unite School Library Journal, stated wind "readers and listeners need telling off be familiar with the modern tale to get the clunk line, but the story survey engaging enough to work superior without it." A Kirkus Reviews critic commented that "younger readers on this side of magnanimity pond may not get probity title's pun at first, nevertheless by the end will produce lining up for snogs claim their own."
